The day had already been a productive one from purchasing the highly desired lakeside farm to stopping in next door to the blacksmith to get a fishing pole. Auburn hair catching the breeze as she walked a set pace, Tessa moved an out of place strand back behind her ear. Her new home was perfect for her needs. It was a larger property with ample room to expand and build, house animals and grow crops. It was right next to the blacksmith and directly across the road from the forest, mountains and plains.
A soft, satisfied sigh escaped her thin rose colored lips as she snagged her olive green pack. This first adventure would be just for lumber collecting to start her on her way to getting a barn or chicken coop. Honestly, she hadn't decided which she wanted first but either way, should would need to be out there in the forest collecting lumber for quite a while. Her pack was light, only filled with some water, snacks, and her copper axe hanging in the side loop. There was plenty of room for some lumber to take across the street.
Not wanting to deforest the trees directly in her property view, Tessa readjusted her pack and began walking directly towards the center of the forest. This gave her less of a chance of falling a tree on anyone passing by and it wouldn't be noticeable from her house. "Ah this seems like the perfect specimen." Emerald orbs found themselves eyeing a decent sized tree, not taller than the others but the quality of the trunk seemed like it might produce some good lumber. Setting her pack down next to the trunk of a nearby tree, Tessa grabbed the wooden handle of the copper axe, her knuckles lined up on both hands like she was going to hit a baseball. Eyes closed for a moment as she inhaled deeply, catching the scents of the surrounding forest. Only a moment passed before her eyes shot open and with one fluid motion while exhaling, Tessa slammed her axe into the base of the trunk. Again. Again. It took a her longer than she imagined to get the tree close to falling and when she heard a small crackle... "TIMBER!" She shouted at the top of her lungs just in case anyone was in any of the surrounding vicinity. "Oh I've always been dying to say that..." And it wouldn't be her last. As the trunk slammed against the ground with a loud thud, Tessa wiped a single sweat drop from her brow and readjusted the olive scarf around her neck, loosening it slightly. Long exhale escaped her thin lips as she walked toward the midsection, chopping up what lumber was salvageable. "Only a single piece it looks like. Got my work cutout for me." Not necessarily complaining, as that would be frowned upon in her family, it only made her want to work harder and select a better specimen. It only took her a few minutes to cut the lumber and place the one singular piece into her satchel and swing it back atop her shoulder.
Emerald eyes scanned the area, her left hand casually placed in her skinny jean pocket and right hand still grasping her now used copper axe. About twenty feet inward Tessa spotted a smaller but thicker tree that she prayed would provide a better yield. Pack set next to a tree a few feet away, she set herself back up at the base of this new tree. Hands lined up toward the bottom of the handle, she hoisted the axe back and slammed it forward into the trunk. Bark pieces exploded from the impact. It seemed like softer wood which Tessa thought could be a positive sign, bringing a smile to her face. She continued quite a few more times until she got to exclaim again. "TIMBER!" Her voice bellowed from the pit of her stomach and echoed in the quietness of the forest. She could only hope there would be more pieces this go around. The thickness of the trunk was made more apparent as Tessa walked to the fallen tree. Axe sliced through the wood like a saw, separating four pieces of good useable lumber. A sigh of relief escaped her mouth, startling herself a little at how dramatic and loud it sounded. All that was on her mind was: 'How long is this going to take if I'm collecting lumber one by one?' and she thankfully just increased her supply substantially just with this one tree. The four pieces took her a good half an hour to slice up and stuff away into her olive pack which was again slung back onto her right shoulder. A thought came to mind as she picked her axe back up off the forest floor - maybe she should pick another tree right around this location.
Setting her pack against the stump of the tree she just felled, Tessa decided that she would pick the tree adjacent to the stump that seemed the thickest. This one was not quite as thick but the bark looked particularly healthy. Auburn ringlet had dislodged itself from behind her left ear from all of the whacking and had blocked her left eye from vision. Tucking that rogue curl back in place, Tessa snagged a couple sips of water before getting her stance set in front of the base of the new tree. She then found herself with her eyes closed, almost meditating for a minute. Thoughts were racing with the increased heart rate beating in her ear. 'I should really think about replanting some trees each day after cutting them down.'
Ruffling leaves sounding to her right jolted her from her thoughts, eyes shooting open and refocusing on her task. Tessa straightened her posture, tightened her grip on the handle of the axe, bent her knees slightly and released the power into her swing. Thump! Each whack into the tree released a big exhale, inhaling as she hoisted it backwards. Thump! Whatever was possibly lurking nearby surely was gone from these pounding sounds. Thump! And with a few more whacks that familiar crackle was heard. "TIMBERRR!" Tessa almost puffed her chest out when she bellowed, her breath getting slightly more rigid. This work was tiresome! She would need her rest everyday if she was going to be out here breaking a sweat at the crack of dawn. Maybe she would go relax at the lake once she was done for the day, she thought. To her surprise, Tessa eyed the log laying on the ground and picked out four pieces of useable lumber again! Apparently her newfound knowledge of tree trunks was paying off. That or she was just getting a bit of luck thrown her way. Whatever that case, she wasn't questioning it. Copper axe rested against the newly felled tree stump, light catching the blade from the opening made in the tree tops. The four pieces were collected and placed into her pack one at a time, Tessa picking up her pack at the end and realizing it was quite heavy. 'Good thing I'm only a couple paces from the house. I can't imagine trekking any longer with this amount of lumber.'
With her olive pack strapped into her shoulders, copper axe back in her right hand, she scooted a few paces backward toward the house as she knew she was growing fatigued from the labor. "I think this one will do." The tree was still deep enough into the forest that she wouldn't make an opening visible from her property but slightly closer since her pack was getting a bit tough to carry. If she ended up getting quite a bit more from a couple more trees, she could always make two trips but Tessa wasn't like that. Even with groceries you'd see her hanging 10 bags from her limbs like she was a Christmas tree with ornaments.
The thought forced a little smirk onto her lips as she readied herself for another chopping session. This trunk was still thicker than the first but not quite like the previous two. "Here goes nothing!" Swinging away at the base, bark chipping off and leaves slowly floating down from the branches, it didn't take too long to get to that sweet crackle. "TIMBER!" With her fatigue, Tessa almost misjudged the direction of the fall, having to step a few steps to the side to ensure her safety. Right hand wiped the multiple sweat beads from her brow as she walked towards the fallen log to see what this one would yield. By this time, the sun was already directly overhead and helping form the beads of sweat on Tessa's forehead. There was a good chance she only had one more tree left in her after she assessed the good lumber from this oak. She could already tell just by walking further up the trunk that there wasn't as much salvageable lumber as her previous two trees. Two pieces. 'Not as bad as the first I guess.' She quickly tossed the lumber into her olive pack that was drooping with the amount of weight it contained. Both the pack and her could only take one more collection attempt that's for sure.
Three rows of trees outside the outline of the forest, Tessa picked one last specimen that would fall today. "Sorry but it's gotta be you." She spoke to the tree as if it heard her apologies. The thought crossed her mind again about replanting seeds. 'Really, anyone who deforests out here should probably replant.' She thought. The amount of people on the island, or that it would grow to be, versus the amount of trees would be devastating to see the deforestation after not very long. Trees took awhile to grow too so she really thought she ought to find out tomorrow about where to buy seeds. By the end of her rambling thoughts, she noticed a shiny object in the ground at the base of the trunk. Perplexed, she bent down to wipe away the dirt to find a Copper Key. Smiling at her random find, she stuffed it into her skinny jeans pocket and set herself into chopping stance.
Axe lined up in position behind her frame, Tessa swung it forward, her body taking the rebound from the smacks into the trunk. This one took her even longer to fell just due to her fatigue. Not too much longer and... "TIMBER!!" She yelled, though it came out more airy and wouldn't have projected very far. Hopefully no one else was around. "What's this last one got?" She hiked her axe up to rest on her shoulder as she walked towards the log to assess it. DATE: Spring 1 || Lumber Attempt 5 TAGS: NPC Account / Open || WORDS: 356
